Director


 

Charlie Metzger – Musical Director

   

Charlie has been a Barbershop Harmony Society member since 1969 and has served as faculty in the BHS Judging Program, Chapter Officer Training School, Harmony University, and Chorus Director Workshop Intensive. He served on the Society Board as Member-at-Large, has chaired Society Committees and is currently past chair of the Society Chorus Director Development Committee.  He was named Evergreen's Barbershopper of the Year in 1979 and to their Hall of Fame in 2002. He is directing Greater Vancouver’s Gentlemen of Fortune for the thirtieth year.

 

         Now retired, Charlie has spent 34 years teaching students from Elementary to University age. He has developed a wide variety of effective materials and approaches to teaching barbershop skills and teaches and coaches actively.  He has an M.A. in Education from Simon Fraser University.

 

         Charlie and his wife, Karen, reside in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada and have three children.  Donya is a Region 26 Sweet Adeline quartet champion, actor, singer, dancer, and vocal teacher.  Tom and Mark sing in the 2005 International Champion Quartet, Realtime. 

 

         Charlie has competed as a director in three International Chorus contests, and as a quartet singer on seven occasions, twice achieving placements in the top twenty in Counterpoint. His senior’s quartet, Antique Gold, won the gold in Sacramento in 2006, bringing the Canadian international quartet gold medal count to seven.
